7 Physiotherapy Tips for a Healthy Posture at Work

Physiotherapist-Approved Tips to Maintain a Healthy Posture at Work

Whether you work at a desk, on the road, or on your feet all day, your posture matters. Poor posture can lead to headaches, fatigue, back pain, and muscle imbalances. Fortunately, small daily adjustments can make a big difference.

Physiotherapist Nelisiwe Mazibuko helps working professionals prevent, relieve posture-related discomfort and achieve a healthy posture at work.

Healthy Posture at work

Here are her 7 expert tips for maintaining a healthy posture at work:

  1. Adjust Your Chair
Your feet should rest flat on the floor, knees at a 90° angle, and hips slightly higher than your knees. Use a lumbar cushion if needed to support the curve of your lower back.
  2. Position Your Screen at Eye Level
Avoid looking down at your screen. Raise your monitor or laptop so the top of the screen is at or slightly below eye level to reduce neck strain.
  3. Take Frequent Breaks
Stand, stretch, and walk for at least 2 to 5 minutes every hour. These micro-breaks relieve pressure on your spine and improve circulation.
  4. Engage Your Core
When sitting or standing, gently activate your core muscles to help support your spine. Avoid slouching or leaning forward.
  5. Be Mindful of Phone Use
Cradling your phone between your shoulder and ear causes neck strain. Use a headset or speakerphone to avoid “text neck.”
  6. Alternate Between Sitting and Standing
If possible, use a sit-stand desk. Alternating positions helps keep your muscles engaged and reduces prolonged stress on your lower back.
  7. See a Physiotherapist for a Posture Assessment
If you regularly experience discomfort, book a session with a physiotherapist. Nelisiwe Mazibuko offers posture evaluations and corrective exercises to support your spinal health.
